Pantone vs. Hex: Why Your Brand Color Needs a Chip, Not a Code
Ask five screens to show the same hex code and you'll get five different colors. Ask five printers to match the same Pantone chip and you'll get one. If your brand color matters to you, that difference is worth two minutes of your time.
What a Pantone color actually is
A Pantone color — a PMS (Pantone Matching System) code like PMS 187 C — isn't an image or a number for screens. It's a physical standard: a printed chip in a guide book, mixed to a published recipe, that looks the same in every copy of that book anywhere in the world.
When a brand guide specifies PMS 187 C, a designer in Austin and a factory across an ocean can each hold the same chip and agree, precisely, on what "right" looks like. The system turns color from an opinion into a measurement — which is why nearly every serious brand defines its identity in PMS codes.
Hex codes are instructions to a screen — and screens disagree
A hex code like #B03938 tells a display how much red, green, and blue light to emit. That's all it is. Panel type, brightness, color calibration, night-shift filters — every one of them changes what actually reaches your eye. The same hex looks one way on your phone, another on your laptop, and a third way on your client's monitor.
Worse: none of those versions is what a physical object painted "that color" will look like. A screen makes color out of light; a coating makes it out of pigment. The two can only ever approximate each other — and for some especially vivid oranges and blues, a standard screen can't fully reproduce the real color at all. The real thing is richer than the preview.
So the honest hierarchy is: the chip is the truth, the hex is a sketch of it. Use hex codes to talk to screens. Use PMS codes to make things.
Why drinkware runs on chips
The powder coat on a tumbler is mixed at a factory, and factories match coatings against Pantone chips — that's the language the whole supply chain speaks.
Color names don't survive the trip. One vendor's "red" is another's brick; a reorder placed by name can come back a visibly different batch, and nobody is technically wrong. We learned this the way everyone does — with three subtly different "reds" on the same shelf — and it's why every color in our own catalog now carries its PMS code on the product page. A chip can't drift. A name can.
How a custom Pantone run works (the honest version)
If you want tumblers in your color — not the closest stock color, your actual PMS — here's the process we run:
- You tell us the color and quantity. PMS code if you have it; just your logo if you don't, and we'll identify the match. Detailed quote within 24 hours.
- A 50% deposit books the run. The factory confirms the match before anything is mixed.
- The factory makes your color. This is the long part — about 8 weeks, roughly 10 weeks door to door in total.
- You approve a photo of the real cup. Not a render, not a mockup — your actual tumbler, photographed when the run lands and checked against our own Pantone guide. If it's not right, you don't approve, and we don't engrave.
- We engrave and ship within 10 days of your approval.
The minimum is 500 units — that's the factory's floor for mixing a custom coat, not a policy we invented — and any whole-case quantity above it works.
